This is a tutorial for user-level (not developer-level) editing of a website running the standard WordPress content management system<\/a>. While the described instance includes separate <\/span>Admin<\/span> and <\/span>Editor<\/span> accounts, they may be combined depending on your site\u2019s setup. <\/span>Disclaimer: <\/span>While this guide is expected to be an accurate description of how the editing system works, you are using it at your own risk.<\/span><\/p>\n

PAGE EDITOR<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the main screen for modifying Web pages, found by going to the <\/span>Pages <\/span>tab and then clicking “Edit” below any page. Stay tuned for descriptions of the other sections, EDITOR TABS<\/strong> and ADMIN TABS<\/strong>.<\/span>The descriptions here are for the <\/span>Editor <\/span>account; advanced options are available in the <\/span>Admin <\/span>account, but are not described here.<\/span><\/p>\n

Editing Window<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the main block of editable content on the page. Text can be changed much like editing a Microsoft Word document. Here are the WordPress-specific options:
\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Title <\/span>(first text field): Appears in the menu and at the top of the page.
\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Permalink<\/span>: Web page address. Do not edit.
<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0Visual\/Text Mode: <\/span>The editor should generally be in \u201cVisual\u201d mode, not \u201cText\u201d; the latter shows the underlying Web page code. Do not change anything you find here, or it can break your Web page.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Add Media: <\/span>Add a picture from your computer (\u201cUpload\u201d) or use a previously-loaded picture (\u201cMedia Library\u201d). Click [Insert into Page] to add it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Add Link<\/span> (chain icon): Select a word(s) or picture, then click this icon to add a Web page link to the item.
\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Remove Link<\/span> (broken chain): Click a linked item, then click this icon to remove it.
\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Full Screen<\/span> (four arrows): Expand the editor to the entire window.
\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Kitchen Sink<\/span> (dots in a box): Display additional options:
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Font<\/span> (usually \u201cParagraph\u201d): Change text styles. \u201cHeading\u201d is used for page titles\/subtitles, and will push down any nearby unselected text.
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Paste from Plain Text <\/span>(\u201cT\u201d), <\/span>Paste from Word<\/span> (\u201cW\u201d): Use these to insert text from other sources.
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Remove formatting<\/span> (eraser): Select text and use this option to remove boldface, fonts, and so forth, such as if a block of text doesn\u2019t match the style of the surrounding content.
<\/span> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Custom Character (omega symbol):<\/span> Insert an accented letter or other symbol. Rarely used.

Publish<\/span>
Change the status of a page, such as keeping a draft from displaying publicly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Status:<\/span> \u201cPublished\u201d (ready for the public); \u201cPending Review\u201d (awaiting approval, unused here); \u201cDraft\u201d (unfinished)
\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Visibility:<\/span> \u201cPublic\u201d (everyone can see), \u201cPassword Protected\u201d (enter password to see), \u201cPrivate\u201d (only viewable to editors)<\/span><\/p>\n

Page Attributes<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0Parent: <\/span>Page appears underneath another in the site hierarchy, for larger websites. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Template:<\/span> \u201cDefault Template\u201d (used on most pages) and other possible page themes<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Order:<\/span> Placement of the page in the menu, e.g., \u201c10\u201d comes before \u201c20\u201d.
\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Featured Image:<\/span> Show a picture for the page, such as in a home page feature.<\/span><\/p>\n
