Here are the elements I’d recommend to be a Web designer (as opposed to a Web programmer<\/a>):<\/p>\n

-Learn the *design* aspect.<\/strong> There’s much more to making websites than throwing code together. Check out The Non-Designer’s Design Book<\/a> or The Non-Designer’s Web Book<\/a> for information on layout, typography, colors, and much more.<\/div>\n
-Get a decent grounding in basic programming<\/a><\/strong> (X)HTML<\/a> and CSS<\/a>; it’s not hard to pick up. Next, learn a bit of JavaScript<\/a>, then check out basic PHP<\/a> commands such as include()<\/a>\/require()<\/a> and for loops<\/a>.<\/div>\n

Find a good graphics program(s).<\/strong> Fireworks<\/a> and Photoshop<\/a> in the Adobe product line<\/a> are excellent, and many have 30-day trials. I’ve also used PaintShopPro<\/a> to good effect, and it’s a fraction of the cost. Some ability with Flash<\/a> helps round out the arsenal.<\/div>\n
